Title: Development of a Robot for Skull Base Surgery
نویسنده
چکیده
A novel robotic system “NeuRobot” is currently being developed at the Computer Integrated Medical Intervention Laboratory, in collaboration with the National Neuroscience Institute and Volume Interactions, for Skull-Base Surgery. It is funded by the Ministry of Education. Skull-Base Surgery (“SBS”) is a procedure that requires a bone removal tool to be used to create a cavity (a “task-envelope”) in the skull-base for removal of lesions (e.g. tumors). The cavity generated allows access to deep-seated brain areas that are inaccessible by other routes. Critical features (like veins, facial nerves, and blood vessels) have to be avoided in the process. Due to the thick bone ridge of the skullbase, a conventional SBS procedure may require a duration of 8 to 9 hours. This procedure requires issues such as accuracy and safety to be taken into consideration. The main reason why this system was envisaged is due to the fact that commercially available systems are lacking in the degrees-of-freedom required. Eminently, the robotic manipulators used in other systems possess a large workspace leading to unconstrained motion that poses a danger to both the patient and surgeon alike.

A robot for transnasal surgery featuring needle-sized tentacle-like arms.
This paper discusses a new class of robots known as concentric tube robots and their application to transnasal skull base surgery. The endonasal approach has clear benefits for patients, but the surgery presents challenges that strongly motivate the use of robotic tools. In this paper, the concentric tube robot concept is described, and preliminary experimental results for transnasal skull base...
متن کاملFungal infection of the sinus and anterior skull base
Abstract Background: Invasive fungal infection is an opportunistic infection caused commonly by mucoraccae and aspergillus. It mostly occurs in patients with underlying disease. Since it has a high mortality and morbidity rate, considering a treatment strategy seems necessary. Objective: Since there has not been a clear protocol for treating these patients, we decided to establish...

Sellar reconstruction algorithm in endoscopic transsphenoidal pituitary surgery: experience with 240 cases
Background: Proposing a strategy for sellar reconstruction in endoscopic transsphenoidal transsellar approach for pituitary adenoma. Methods: 240 patients with pituitary adenoma underwent pure endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal surgery. Intra-operative CSF leaks were classified as grade 0, no observable leak grade 1, CSF dripping through an arachnoid membrane defect of less than 1 ...
متن کاملEndonasal Skull Base Tumor Removal Using Concentric Tube Continuum Robots: A Phantom Study.
Objectives The purpose of this study is to experimentally evaluate the use of concentric tube continuum robots in endonasal skull base tumor removal. This new type of surgical robot offers many advantages over existing straight and rigid surgical tools including added dexterity, the ability to scale movements, and the ability to rotate the end effector while leaving the robot fixed in space. In...
